The PARTHENON 2500 years old…..As an ancient civilisation with so many memorable monuments and sculptures bequeathed to the world, and use of marble providing a testimony of its glorious past, it is but natural to ask the question, what were the Greek marbles used in antiquity. This article is a brief description of the marbles of ancient times, and the wonder is many of them are still being be used today. “Cosmetically, Marble is one of the world’s most luxurious commodities, unchallenged by any other natural material.” Across the immensity of time from the early works of Praxitelis and Phidias and entering into the 21st Century, marble has presented unquestionable aesthetic value.The historic quarries of Paros Island were once used to source marble for splendors such as Venus De Milos and Napoleon’s tomb in Paris. Paros Island today is the home of new excavations and together with its sister island Naxos, produces some of the world’s finest marble. PENTELICON marble mining started during the age of Pericles. According to Lepsius there were 25 quarries operating at the time, with a total amount of 4000 cb of marble production that was further used for erecting the significant monuments of the Acropolis, as well as for chiseling the status of unrivalled skill and beauty that constitute our heritage.
